The three levels of electronic signatures (eIDAS Regulation)
Simple electronic signature (SES)
Basic digital signature without special requirements, e.g., a scanned signature or an email footer.
Advanced electronic signature (AES)
Uniquely linked to the signatory and created using means that are under their sole control.
Qualified electronic signature (QES)
Highest level – based on a qualified certificate and created using a secure signature creation device.
Recognized across the EU
QES is legally recognized in all EU Member States under the eIDAS Regulation (EU) No. 910/2014. In Germany, it replaces the written form pursuant to § 126a BGB and is legally equivalent to a handwritten signature.
